Merchants defend title at KIBT

The Everett Merchants have won the 46th edition of the Kamloops International Baseball Tournament. The title is the second in as many years for Everett, as they defeated the Alaska Goldpanners 6-1 in the Championship game.

The Merchants were led by Jared Maxfield, who pitched a complete game in the final. Maxfield scattered just four hits through his 9 innings of work and only walked one batter while striking out three.

Everett scored a pair of runs in the 1st inning, added two more in the 5th, then tacked on insurance runs in the 7th and 9th. Alaska scored their lone run in the bottom of the 9th.

The Merchant’s Manager Harold Pyatte was happy with how his team battled through a rainy weekend at the diamond.

“This year we played games in the rain, we played three games at 8:30 in the morning,” Pyatte said. “In the three games we got delayed we were ahead in two of them and had to come back [to the field] at 7:30, get up at 6:30… these kids did not let themselves down. They wanted it really bad, and they deserve it.”

The Merchants beat perennial KIBT contenders, the Seattle Studs, 11-1 in the first semi-final. The Goldpanners handled the Calgary Dinos 12-0 in the second to set up the championship clash.

Starting pitcher Cameron Walker took the loss for Alaska. He pitched seven innings, striking out, three, walking two and gave up five runs on 9 hits.
